Happy Halloween

Jess carved this! Don't know if I am going to get any trick-or-treaters tonight but I have the candy ready!

Saw this hooded merganser yesterday. Was across the lake so the picture isn't great. Am hoping they around to stay!

Some adorable fungus!

They call this a banana spider... it is BIG!

I love this photo! Saw the hummingbird so I just sat down and waited until it landed and posed!

another busy week

starting with a Snowy Egret with an attitude

I was on TV Thursday as a part of the "dirty dozen" at Airlie Garden... a truckload of azaleas was donated for local gardeners to plant as an early start for the azalea festival in April and I got to help unload the truck...

and for a break in retirement today I helped on an 8th grade field trip at Airlie Gardens from 9am-12pm for 30 students from DC Virgo Middle School then I headed to Calabash, NC for a "meetup" and lunch with the Senior Ladies... on the way home I stopped in Sunset Beach and took some pictures

Moon Rise

went to the beach for the sunset and moonrise but only brought my 18-55mm lens (not very smart idea!).... but while I was on the beach this college kid who was taking pictures of his buddies playing football saw me taking pictures of the moon coming up... we started talking and he asked me if I wanted to use his 250mm lens! what a nice guy... here are some of my pictures. (Including Lacey making herself at home in the guest room!)

a busy week

Red-Bellied Woodpecker (with snack in bill)

American Black Ducks (I think!)

Pied-Billed Grebes (who makes up these names?)

Northern Flicker

Wood Duck (I am still in awe of this animal's colors!)

Cypress tree roots on Black River

Fall Colors in NC

Sunday, 10/17 - At the beach from 8-10. Came home and baked an apple pie. Doubleheader flag football game. John, Jess, Dave here for Family Dinner.

Monday & Tuesday, 10/18-19 - Went to Greensboro to see Bonnie! Had a great visit and stopped at Trader Joe's in Raleigh on the way home. Dinner at Front Street Brewery with Cape Fear Camera Club when I got home.... stories to tell about that when I see you!

Wednesday, 10/20 - Black River Nature Cruise from 9:30 to 1:30 with narration by Andy Wood from the Audubon Society. Learned that NC does have "fall" and the leaves do change! Pizza dinner with John & Dave

Thursday, 10/21 - Tide was too high for a good walk but I did get some time at Airlie Gardens. Dinner at Baja Grill with two of the "Senior Ladies".

Friday, 10/22 - On the beach for sunrise. Went to Airlie Gardens and saw Northern Flicker, Pied-Billed Grebes, and American Black Ducks along with the usual Wood Ducks and Red-Bellied Woodpeckers. Volunteered to be part of the Airlie "Dirty Dozen" on Thursday mornings (means I show up with my garden gloves and plant & weed) and was asked if I would help with school trips (need help with 8th grade groups the most... that I can do!). Enjoyed the Fourth Friday Gallery Nights Walk in downtown Wilmington from 6 to 9 and then dinner with the Wilmington Dining Adventurists Group.

Saturday, 10/23 - Went downtown this morning for the Wilmington Downtown Lifestyle Tour which consisted of visiting 15 "lofts and living spaces" on a walking tour. Joan would have loved this! Tonight I am headed for the beach to watch the moonrise!

The week was full of much needed phone calls from friends. I love my new home and definitely keep busy but still miss you all!

still learning

I just learned that the picture I posted a few days ago (called it a female wood duck) is really a mottled duck. I keep learning! Never even knew there was such a thing as a mottled duck.

Road Trip

Tuesday/ Went to see Get Low with Robert Duvall and Bill Murray and liked it!

Wednesday/ Monthly Bird Walk at Airlie Gardens, then Farmers Market at Poplar Grove, then snapping turtle adventure at Abbey Nature Preserve.

Thursday/ Was feeling a bit lonely, nothing planned for the day so I took a road trip. Headed for the Southport Riverwalk (about an hour away) and ended up stopping at Brunswick Town--Fort Anderson State Historic Site, Orton Plantation Gardens, Boiling Spring Lakes Preserve and Brunswick Nature Park (all on the North Carolina Birding Trail list) on the way. So the trip took most of the day. The mosquitoes here are terrible because of the heavy rain we had before but the places were all beautiful. I look forward to getting back to them another time. "Everyone" says that the birding is about to burst as fall settles in.

Watched Jeff Bridges (aka 'the dude') in an old movie "The Amateurs" last night and laughed out loud several times. To quote the internet "Citizens of a small town, under the influence of a man in the midst of a mid-life crisis, come together to make an adult film."

Today (Friday)/ We had a BIG thunderstorm late yesterday and the weather has changed a bit. It was cooler this morning (50) and only reached 67 today. Went to Mason Inlet for the Friday Bird Walk this morning and then sat on the beach and read until noon.

Had a much needed conversation with Anne this afternoon to help me continue the "and now what are you going to do with yourself" process that I am experiencing.

Dave had a workshop day at school and got out early (have to love those teacher workshops) so he and I went out for pizza around 3. And now I am to meet 6 of the Senior Ladies of Wilmington for pizza at 5 (guess who isn't hungry) and then we are going to the movies to see "Life as We Know It".

and now I wait to see what the weekend brings!
