Cygnets!

I have been watching this nesting swan for over a month. Checking weekly to see what is happening.
"Poppa" swan has been busy chasing the Canada geese away from the nest.
And finally today there are four baby swans, cygnets! I think I still see two unhatched eggs in the nest.
I do NOT understand why they were the "ugly ducklings" in the fairy tale!
Looking forward to seeing them swimming on the lake. Although I am concerned after hearing that none of the babies survived last year. Too many raccoons, foxes, and hawks, I guess.
This tricolored heron was sitting near the nest.

And then I was in charge of driving the tram from 12-2. I love taking people around the lake. The teacher in me quickly comes to the surface as I tell stories about Airlie Gardens.

  1. Nice follow-through shots of this swan family! The photo below the 'ugly duckling' caption has great composition--the vine is in perfect harmony with the shape of the mother's neck while the surrounding leaves frame her beautifully. Your photo also evokes emotion from the mother gazing (lovingly) down toward the cygnets. I love the heron shots and zoomed them in for closer inspection because I'm just so fascinated by these birds! Don't you wonder where there's room to tuck in that long leg??
